What is Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a registered health profession that specialises in treating musculoskeletal (bone, nerve, joint and muscle) injury and pain.

Physiotherapy is aligned with western science and evidence-based medicine, which means you can be confident you are getting the best help available.

Physiotherapists have completed a 4-year university degree.  “Sports Physiotherapists” have a special interest in sports related research, injury prevention, and treatment.

You don’t need to be an athlete to visit a Sports Physio.  All are welcome.

WHO ARE YOU?

You’ve got something that hurts.

You either remember the exact time it started with a knock / sprain / strain, or the pain started gradually.  If the pain started gradually you may know it’s because of something repetitive you had to do, or you can’t think of any good reason for it.

It’s time to get help if

  • the pain is getting worse or interfering with your daily life, including sleeping
  • the pain was getting better, but now has plateaued and not improving further
  • it’s getting better but you want advice on how to avoid problems in the future

You may just want reassurance that it’s not something too serious.  It’s good to know you are doing the right thing to look after yourself.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE INITIAL APPOINTMENT?

Your initial appointment will be at least 40 minutes.  This allows time for a thorough assessment, initial diagnosis, and discussion on what treatment is most appropriate.

I will ask a lot of questions about your injury – a big part of making an accurate diagnosis comes from information you can tell me.  Then we’ll do some movement based assessment to help confirm the diagnosis.

I’ll then explain what is happening, in language you can understand.  If you don’t understand say so. Understanding what is happening is important for understanding what we do for treatment and how long it will take.

You will likely have stretching & strengthening exercises to do at home. These are an important part of your treatment. Not doing them delays your progress. If there is some reason you can’t do them let me know so I can change or adapt your treatment

FOLLOW-UP VISITS

Follow-up appointments are generally 30 minutes long.  For some injuries you may need to see me a few times a week. For others I need to see you less frequently and it is the exercises that will help you

If you have any queries or problems please contact me so we can keep you on the right track.
